Baron Pierre de Coubertin
Fondateur des Jeux Olympiques modernes
The foundation of the modern pentathlon was envisioned by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games:
«...a test of a person's moral qualities, their physical capabilities and skills, producing the ideal, complete athlete.»
The addition of 'modern' distinguished it from the ancient Olympic pentathlon. Until 1948, competitions were restricted to military officers before the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) was established in London. Modern Pentathlon has been on the Olympic program continuously since 1912.
Competition Format & Laser-Run
The Olympic scoring format
Athletes compete in fencing, swimming, equestrian/obstacle, and the final Combined Laser-Run event (running & laser pistol shooting).
Each discipline has a target benchmark worth a base score (250 points, or 300 points in obstacles). Outperforming the benchmark awards bonus points, while falling short deducts points.
The finale features a thrilling staggered start based on accumulated points from prior events: the athlete who crosses the finish line first is crowned the overall champion.
