The ceremony honouring the winners of the 2016 National Awards in physical culture and sports took place in Moscow. The 28-year-old Olympic champion Alexander Lesun was named Russia’s best athlete.
- This came as a surprise to me, because our country has many famous athletes, while we represent a modest sport. I am very happy to receive this award, and I hope that my performance at the Olympics helps popularise elite sport and gives a boost to the development of our sport. I would like to thank the Ministry of Sport and my coach, - Lesun said.
The award was presented to Lesun by Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko. The athlete will also receive a cash prize of 500,000 roubles.
